Should one capitalize the names of card games?
Alphonso Brake: I could not find an article addressing this specific issue. However, I think it depends on the usage. For example, Canasta, and Gin Rummy, Rummy, 5-Card Stud, etc, I think are clearly proper nouns which must be capitalized. However, if you are talking about poker in general it is not a proper noun as it is a word being used to describe a wide variety of games. But if you talk about a specific game of poker, for example, 5-Card Stud or Texas Hold-em, capitalization would be appropriate. The determining factor is, as you state, is the word a proper noun. Proper nouns (also called proper names) are nouns representing unique entities (such as London, or John, as distinguished from common nouns which describe a class of entities (such as city, well or person). so if poker is being used to describe a class of entities (i.e. games that are forms of poker) it would be a common noun, but if describing a specific game, it would be a proper noun.I hope that he! lps a little....Show more
Porfirio Cahall: Like "president/President," I think it may depend on use.If you are referring to a class of games, it's "poker." "We played poker all night. I had large losses at the poker tables."If you are referring to a specific game, it's more likely "Poker.""We played Draw Poker until three, then switched to 5-Card Stud."According to this source, the names of games are "borderline" cases, and there is precedent for either form. http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/User:EncycloPetey/En...My advice is decide for yourself, and be consistent within your own writing as you apply the "cap/no cap" rule as you see it....Show more

King Bringle: No. Reference to traditional card games in general is in lower case: poker, bridge, hearts, canasta, bezique (all lower case ! in Oxford English Dictionary). They would only be capitalised a! s names of a specific product title, for example: "Waddington's Canasta", "Omar Sharif's Guide to Bridge".[Journalists are an authority on grammar???!!! Ollie Desalvo: I am pretty sure they are proper pronoun, so it should be capitalized. If you noticed even the letters of the cards are uppercase.
