Majoring in visual arts or music/are there majors out there that will help me incorporate my creativity?
Seema Hosfeld: Hey, I just hope that you consider for a second that your perception of music theory isn't quite right. I've heard a lot of people with similar problems with learning theory, until I help them understand why it's important. Do you like creating music? Do you like playing with expression? Trust me, learning theory is not just a bunch of useless information. For example, you could be composing some piece of music and discover a technique or concept that you think is awesome! But then you realize that you could have been taught that concept in the first week of Music 1010. I had a friend that was telling me about this awesome way for them to replace a chord with a different chord and keep the melody the same. He's been playing music for years and years and performs semi often. I just thought about what he said for about 3 seconds and said "so you used the relative minor?" I knew how to do what he was so excited about from a tiny bit of theory I lea! rned even before my college degree. If he'd have taken a class, he'd know he has so many options for making his music sound awesome. Don't think of music theory as "rules of music" but think of it more as what cool musical concepts have been discovered, which you can use in your music to make them sound more interesting. Pop music usually uses about 0 theory. The bands that really go places actually know their theory enough to make their music so much more interesting (pink floyd, muse, radiohead, etc). And if you discover a new concept that hasn't been talked about in music theory, way to go! I use the music theory that I've learned all the time when I'm composing or reading music. It really makes a difference, and if you catch the real vision of it, it's so awesome and fun. Check out this site if you decide to really start learning, and learn from your teachers and friends. It's way awesome....Show more
Georgianna Zollo: Have you tried creative writing? Alt! hough, it'll also be difficult to land a job with it...Well, t! here is no 'perfect' career path out there, even in the art industry. But when you truly love doing something, you'll learn to love all the challenges and downsides too.
