What's the difference between indoctrination and conditioning?

Serena Doak: Indoctrination in its generic form is simply to give instructions concerning a set of doctrines (agreed upon standards, beliefs, and behaviors); which may be political, religious, or social at their root. There are synonyms for indoctrination that give indication to the intensity of technique being used;instruction, teaching, schooling, training, drilling, inculcation, inspire, influence, imbue, brainwash, Indoctrination relies heavily on negative reinforcement of things feared but unseen. In Christianity for example; the threat of going to Hell for misdeeds or lack of belief is viewed as a fearful and unwanted consequence of not accepting the doctrine of the church. If one does what they are taught, they will be in good standing with God and their religious community, and the threat of going to Hell is eliminated. In both Indoctrination and Conditioning; either a positive or a negative reinforcement can be used. For clarity on the definition of positive and negati! ve in a psychological sense;Positive reinforcement = means that a certain behavior will get rewarded. Or have a consequence, in this way being grounded can still be regarded as a positive reinforcement. It is important to understand the word Positive simply means something will be added.Negative reinforcement = means that a certain behavior will get something undesired removed. For example, If I do my homework, I get a good grade as a reward (positive reinforcement). If I do not do my homework I get a bad grade - still (positive reinforcement). If I have a headache, and I take an aspirin, the pain is goes away, (negative reinforcement). If I am overweight and I go on a diet, I lose weight, (Negative reinforcement).I only point this out because it is common to think of negative reinforcement as punishment, but in the study of psychology as in many other fields the definitions of words are specific to their field and often are not the same as the definitions used in general thin! king and speaking, and frequently lead to misunderstanding...B! oth Conditioning and Indoctrination tend to use intermittent reinforcement to maintain a conditioned response. When the subject does not know if a certain response will result in a desired outcome at any given time, once they are conditioned, they will likely continue the response regardless of the outcome. The Lottery is a good example of this. Marketeers realize that providing one in every 20 people with a ticket that wins two dollars will keep them buying tickets to try and get the million dollar ticket that they will most likely never win. The player sees the two dollar winner as a positive reinforcement. The fact that it is intermittent (they never know if they will win, but they believe it is possible based on a previous experience) makes it almost impossible to unlearn the response once it has been reinforced just one or two times. Industry uses this same technique with unscheduled raises in pay to avoid paying any regular pay increase. The employee only needs to get! one 10 cent raise keep working and believing another will come, when in fact it often never will regardless of how hard they work. It is a conditioning technique that is carefully worked out by industrial psychologists. The short answer to your question ...what are the differences? Indoctrination and Conditioning are synonyms, they are identical except they are terms used in different areas of society. They both have the aim of creating automatic responses in people that will be carried out with little or no supervision or prompting. They are a form of psychological remote control that serve their propagators....Show more

Sonya Volcko: Conditioning is an adjective used to describe something in a more academic manner and without any negative connotations. Indoctrination is an adjective we use to provoke an emotional response opposed to that conditioning. All indoctrination is a form of conditioning, but not all conditioning is a form of indoctrination.

Lawana Nee! mann: I don't think there is much difference, if any. Maybe indoctrination refers to a more formal technique.
