In Genealogy: If an off-branch clan descended from a main branch, are they considered direct or distant rel?
answers1: not clear on your definition of an "off branch" vs "main
branch".
If I understand... say, your gr gr gr grandfather is your direct
ancestor... that is because he is the father /father/father so forth.
It is direct lineage for you. You descend from one of his children.
There normally would be siblings to that child, who are not
your DIRECT lineage.
If you used a grandfather to illustrate...his child is your parent.
Your parents siblings are aunt/uncle to you. You don't descend from
aunts/uncles, they are relatives.
The idea of DISTANT depends on how many generations back you go.
Children having the same grandparents are 1st cousins. Each generation
you go back, they are 2nd, 3rd, 4th. etc. A first cousin is recent/
less distant.
Direct has to do with an immediate parent/child relationship, even if
it is 4 generations back.

ANYONE who isn't a parent/child connection is indirect...or what you
may be calling "off branch". They are no less related to the original
ancestor. Each child "down" from the ancestor is equally related, but
they would not be YOUR direct line.
answers2: In 1054 there develop right into a "large Schism" which
split the "East" from Rome, and Roman Catholicism and Orthodox
seperated, the important vast difference being that RCs take their
authority from the Pope at the same time as Orthodox do not. Then
contained in the sixteenth Century there develop into the Protestant
Reformation at the same time as particular thinkers in Europe began to
develop into disgruntled with particular factors of Catholicism and so
also broke remote from Rome. in spite of the undeniable fact that,
interior each and each and every branch many diverse subdivisions have
sprung up at a range of of circumstances, so there are this variety of
number of alterations even interior those 3 that it would want to take
pages to communicate! My advice might want to be to have a glance on
the pages i have referenced below (on the grounds that it is an
exceptionally simplified answer) and in case you want to understand
more beneficial then purely save searching on Wikipedia on the grounds
that there are literally thousands of pages on the a range of of
branches of Christianity! desire that enables slightly!
answers3: "Main" is either the one you are in, or, in England, the one
with the eldest son of the eldest son of the eldest son, since he
inherits the family estate, coat of arms and the fortune, while the
other sons become naval officers or bishops or go to Australia. (The
daughters get married.)

"Direct" are your parents, grandparents, great grandparents, etc.;
children, grandchildren, etc.

"Distant" is a vague term used when someone doesn't want to take the
time to say, for instance, "Fourth cousin twice removed" - or doesn't
know the exact relation.
answers4: Genealogy is not about 'clans' genealogy is about ancestors,
direct ancestors are your parents, grandparents, great grandparents
and so on, your cousins, uncles, aunts are 'branch lines' and you are
not descended from them, you would have a common blood ancestor which
makes you related...so you and your cousins share common blood
related grandparents..........

Clans are a whole different thing........... Clans are groups of
people some 'related', some friends , some neighbours all got together
to live, hunt, fight....... and from ancient history, nothing to do
with genealogy at all as you can't prove research as there are no
records to prove it............ now in today's society the mythical
surname clans, set up purely to sell products, another is the
association of tartan to a surname...it is completely mythical a
modern day marketing ploy to improve the textile industry and sell to
Americans who are desperate to be part of a 'Scottish clan' and
encouaged by the America film industry..........just like religion it
is about a belief system and believing is real in the heads of those
that do, it is not fact just because you believe it........
" The battle of Culloden in 1745 was the last stand in the campaign by
supporters of the Catholic Prince Charles Edward Stuart to form a
challenge to the ruling Hanoverian King, George II (Morgan, p423). The
'Young Pretender' promoted Highland dress as the uniform of his
Jacobite army. This led to tartan being associated with political
rebellion and sedition and to its proscription under the Disarming Act
of 1746. Under this Act, which lasted until 1782, the wearing of
tartan was forbidden, with the penalty of possible transportation for
seven years (Cheape, pp32-38).

Tartan was promoted when the textile industry was in decline causing
great unemployment to a wool/weaving industry in Scotland, worn by
the King George IV to Edinburgh in 1822, during which the monarch
appeared in a version of full Highland dress. This royal endorsement
of tartan was continued from the 1840s by Queen Victoria, which was a
great stimulus to its fashionability in Britain, France, and elsewhere
(Scarlett 1990, pp35-37). "
answers5: Not sure what you mean by "off-branch clan"
You direct ancestry starts with you and follows the paternal lineage,
the maternal lineage may be included, but it traced from the Paternal
lineage. Your Aunt and Uncles are not part of your direct lineage as
you do not descent directly from them, they are considered extended
family.
distant relatives are those those are 4th or more distant cousins and
if they are "removed" they are definitely distant. However a first
cousin once removed is part of your extended family, and although
somewhat distant not usually called that.
answers6: You are probably talking about collateral ancestors and
collateral descendants. You are a direct descendant of your
grandparents, great grandparents, great great grandparents and so on
as the great double in each generation you go back.

You are a collateral descendants of your grandparents siblings, gr
grandparents siblings and your gr gr grandparents siblings. <a

Collateral descendants and ancestors are correct legal and
genealogical terms. Eventually you will all go back to a common
direct ancestor.
